🏛 SEC Moves Toward Blockchain-Based Stock Trading
According to reports, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is exploring a plan to allow tokenized stocks to trade on cryptocurrency exchanges.
As per The Information, the initiative is still in early stages and would allow buying and selling of digital stock tokens on approved crypto platforms, representing shares in publicly listed companies. This reflects growing regulatory acceptance of tokenization, the process of creating blockchain-based representations of real-world assets.
SEC Chair Paul Atkins called tokenization a promising “innovation” that could increase market access, reduce costs, and improve economic efficiency.
📈 Focus on Tokenized Stock Adoption
Interest in tokenized equities has surged in recent months. Platforms like Robinhood, Kraken, and Nasdaq have been exploring tokenized equity offerings through regulated exchanges. Coinbase is reportedly seeking approval to offer tokenized stocks to its users.
While the SEC is broadly supportive, some traditional finance players have urged caution. Citadel Securities noted in a memo to the SEC’s Crypto Task Force in July that tokenized securities must provide real market innovation rather than simply enabling regulatory arbitrage.
“Tokenized securities must succeed not through self-serving regulatory arbitrage, but by providing real innovation and efficiency to market participants,” Citadel emphasized.

💹 Tokenized Stocks Are Assets of the Future
Tokenized stocks are emerging as one of the fastest-growing areas of financialization. Initially applied to private credit and U.S. Treasury bonds, tokenization is now expanding to equities.
Industry data shows that over $31 billion in assets have been tokenized, with stock tokens representing roughly 2% of the total. Demand for tokenized equities has nearly doubled in just 100 days.
Binance Research reports that tokenized stocks could rival the early DeFi boom of 2020–2021, potentially generating a market worth over $1.3 trillion if just 1% of global equities are tokenized.
The SEC’s initiative to trade stocks on the blockchain aims to bring traditional finance and digital assets closer together, offering new investment opportunities for both retail and institutional investors.
