OpenAI to unveil the first open-weight AI model since GPT-2

OpenAI is preparing to launch its first open-weight AI model since GPT-2, marking a significant step in AI accessibility and development. This move could reshape the AI landscape, providing researchers and developers with new tools for innovation.

Unlike the fully open-source models, open-weight models offer access to their trained parameters but maintain core control of the development.  This approach allows developers to customize and deploy the AI while OpenAI maintains oversight. The announcement comes at a time when the competition in A.I. has heated up. Firms like DeepSeek and Google recently launched their open AI models, which initiated a race for technology. OpenAI intends to diversify the group of people who can use their inexpensive, more accessible “open AI” model.
