A fake OKX browser extension is found in the Firefox Store

OKX users have received information about a fraudulent browser extension masquerading as an official Firefox plugin. The exchange warns anyone who could have downloaded the bogus plugin to move their money with care. Disguised under OKX branding, the extension was under investigation for possible theft of personal information and bitcoin.

OKX has issued a warning about a phony browser extension that has surfaced in the Firefox browser plugin store. OKX found the bogus extension on January 8, which claimed to be from the bitcoin exchange. The exchange explained that it has not published any Firefox plugins; hence, consumers who have unintentionally downloaded the extension should take care to move any money from their connected wallets.

The phony plugin, designed to mimic an official OKX extension, integrates features from outside the Firefox browser. Cybercriminals frequently use such extensions to empty users’ bitcoin wallets and gather secret keys, thereby compromising sensitive data. In response, OKX reminded consumers to only download software from its official website or verified social media accounts, and contacted Firefox to remove the harmful plugin from the store.

Regrettably, the misleading extension garnered some popularity, with 95 downloads recorded prior to its removal request. While it remains unclear if any users have lost money, the exchange emphasized the importance of exercising caution when downloading plugins and tools related to cryptocurrency exchanges. Malicious extensions and phishing frauds are becoming increasingly sophisticated, significantly jeopardizing the protection of digital assets.

This event reminds us to always confirm the legitimacy of browser extensions before running them, especially those connected to bitcoin exchanges. Users can prevent themselves from falling victim to such frauds by remaining vigilant and relying on reliable sources.
