Bhutan to Deploy 10,000 Bitcoin to Build Gelephu Mindfulness City

Bhutan is unlocking the power of its national Bitcoin reserves to fund the ambitious Bhutan Bitcoin Gelephu Mindfulness City project. By strategically deploying up to 10,000 BTC, the Himalayan kingdom aims to fuel sustainable growth, create high-value jobs, and redefine how sovereign Bitcoin can drive real-world development.

Bhutan Bitcoin Gelephu Mindfulness City: A Nation-Building Experiment

The Kingdom of Bhutan has confirmed plans to strategically use 10,000 Bitcoin from its national holdings to help finance Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) — a bold, future-focused special administrative region designed to reshape the country’s economic destiny.

Launched in 2024, GMC is located in southern Bhutan near the town of Gelephu and is envisioned as a next-generation economic hub. The project’s primary mission is clear: retain young talent, reverse brain drain, and generate high-value jobs without sacrificing Bhutan’s deeply rooted principles of sustainability and wellbeing.

How Bitcoin Will Fund Gelephu Mindfulness City

Bhutan’s government estimates the Bitcoin allocation for GMC at approximately $875 million, and officials emphasize that the funds will be handled with extreme caution and long-term discipline.

Rather than selling Bitcoin outright, the country is exploring a mix of:

  • Risk-managed yield strategies
  • Treasury optimization frameworks
  • Long-term Bitcoin holding structures

According to Bhutanese authorities, the core objective is capital preservation. Any deployment of Bitcoin will be governed by strict oversight, transparency, and prudent financial controls.

“Bitcoin’s enduring strength lies in its ability to compound value over time,” the government noted, underscoring its commitment to stability over speculation.

Why Bhutan Is Uniquely Positioned to Use Bitcoin

Bhutan is no newcomer to sovereign Bitcoin strategy. The country ranks among the top five national Bitcoin holders globally, with an estimated 11,286 BTC — largely accumulated through state-backed Bitcoin mining powered by surplus hydropower.

This renewable-energy-driven mining approach aligns perfectly with Bhutan’s environmental priorities and its Gross National Happiness (GNH) philosophy, which prioritizes collective wellbeing over raw economic output.

Bitcoin at the Heart of Bhutan’s Long-Term Development Policy

The Bhutan Bitcoin Gelephu Mindfulness City initiative is part of a broader national Bitcoin development pledge — a strategy that treats Bitcoin not as a speculative asset, but as long-term economic infrastructure.

King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck has made it clear that GMC is intended to benefit the entire population of Bhutan, not just local stakeholders.

“Think of GMC as a company and landowners as its shareholders,” the King said, explaining that since most land is state-owned, prosperity from the project will be shared nationwide.

To support this vision, Bhutan is developing new land policies aimed at preventing inequality and ensuring inclusive growth.

Inside Gelephu Mindfulness City

GMC spans nearly 1,544 square miles, covering close to 10% of Bhutan’s total land area. The city offers regulatory flexibility for cryptocurrency, fintech, and green technology firms, while also serving as a base for expanded Bitcoin mining operations.

Key features already in motion include:

  • Crypto-based payments for merchants and tourism
  • A sovereign digital token (TER) backed by gold
  • A dedicated legal framework, governance board, and executive leadership

Construction and site preparation have begun, with the project expected to roll out in multiple phases over the next 20 years.

A Bitcoin-Powered Corridor for Asia

Strategically positioned between South Asia and Southeast Asia, Gelephu Mindfulness City is envisioned as an economic corridor with executive autonomy and legal independence — a rare experiment where Bitcoin, sustainability, and nation-building intersect.

As countries debate Bitcoin’s role in public finance, Bhutan is already putting it to work — not as a gamble, but as a carefully managed tool for long-term national prosperity.
